GUAM’S UNDERWATER SURPRISE

If you’re a diving enthusiast, you have to experience Guam’s majestic dive sites – magnificent waters with ship wrecks covered with sea flora and fauna that will stay in your mind forever, not to mention one of the world’s healthiest marine preserves!

Guam offers clear water with visibility well over 100 feet (30 meters) at many sites, allowing you to marvel at its wide array of colorful coral reefs even from afar – dazzling sea stars, anemones, fishes of all sizes and hues, and assorted plants and coral life. From the boat, you can even spot an occasional dolphin frolicking in the calm waters. In Guam, the surprises are never-ending.

One favorite dive site is the Blue Hole, a natural coral shaft with teaming marine life and visibility up to 100 feet (30 meters). The red-tooth triggerfish, titan triggerfish, crocodile needlefish and various butterfly fish will meet you here to amaze you. Along the wall plunging into the depths, larger fish such as Napoleons, barracudas, manta rays and turtles swim. Even though the Blue Hole is famous for its deep cavern, it can easily be done as a relatively shallow dive.

A few hundred meters south of the Blue Hole is the Crevice, again bustling with beautiful fish and turtles. Pyramid butterflyfish will swarm around you when you get here. There are beautiful Sea Fans along the walls of the Crevice.

Barracuda Rock is equally captivating. It features great visibility, as do all of the open ocean sites along Guam’s west coast, and a boulder-strewn ocean floor, sometimes harboring colorful lobsters. Its caves are filled with red squirrelfish, hatchetfish, and big porcupine fish.

Another interesting dive site is the Gab Gab 2 reef, which the Atlantis tourist submarine circles. It is one place where you will most likely see big fish such as giant trevallies, batfish, a nurse shark and a moray eel. If you look closely, especially in the round concrete structures on the reef, you can even find big stonefish.

Besides the richness of its aquatic life, Guam’s diving sites are steeped in history. The ship wrecks tell many stories that wait to be discovered underwater, including that of a German ship from World War I, the SMS Cormoran, which came into contact with a Japanese ship, Tokai Maru, during World War II. The Japanese ship was actually sunk during battle, and damage from the bombing can be seen on the ship. This is the only place in the world where wrecks from both world wars touch beneath the surface.

Equally interesting is the American Tanker, a concrete barge sunk after WWII. There are a few open rooms along the ship deck, as well as the superstructure itself, which can be safely entered by divers without special shipwreck training. You can find an emperor angelfish hanging around the rudder, and there are red snappers, titan triggerfish and assorted fusillears, butterflyfish and parrotfish around the wreck.

Safety is an upmost priority for the diving community in Guam. In the event of any accidents, there are two fully staffed recompression chambers run by the U.S. Navy and two hospitals – one military and one private.

Guam has dive packages for divers of all ages and booking a dive package is easy and convenient. Moreover, its lodgings and hotels are destinations in their own right. Indeed, Guam is a diver’s paradise waiting to be discovered.

So I created beddings, drapes and accessories that balanced tasteful and relaxing privacy in the rooms without distracting from the beautiful outdoors,” she explained.

“The hotel has 30 units, which is ideal for our concept of a cozy, homey atmosphere for our guests. At this point, we’d still like to avoid a crowded feeling. With a controlled number of stay-in guests, it’s more likely for them to savor the lovely, expansive views and to feel relaxed and carefree, with lots of elbow room to spare,” says Mimi Acacio, President of San Juanico Golf Hotel.

Architect Ed Cumpio designed the hotel with the aim of giving guests every chance to feel relaxed and refreshed. In order to maximize guests’ experience of the surrounding landscape, Cumpio designed the outer units so that they have terraces that descend in a cascade.

As a result, occupants on each unit—from the top to the lower levels, are able to have an unobstructed, panoramic view of the landscaped golf course, the green hills, and the famous San Juanico Bridge that spans for two kilometers across the strait between Samar and Leyte islands. The San Juanico Bridge is considered the most beautiful sea-spanning bridge in the Philippines.

“The feeling of being in such a beautiful, expansive, relaxing place surrounded by greenery, with clear skies and the view of the panoramic landscape that opens toward the huge bridge is a great stress reliever. You simply feel that you’ve left your cares behind and you have all the time for yourself and your loved ones,” says Liza Cahilig, who provided the customized beddings, accessories and drapes.

When Mimi Acacio approached her for the project of providing the customized beddings and drapes—and after she saw the San Juanico Park Golf and Country Club—she was immediately inspired by the surroundings.

“The very first word in my mind was ‘paradise’. The whole place is a showcase of natural beauty and human landscaping art. For the new hotel, I made sure that the drapes and beddings were customized for comfort and aesthetics that were functional and in good taste, without being gaudy,” Cahilig explains.

Acacio commends Cahilig for a wonderful job with the drapes, beddings and beddings accessories.
“My concept was to create rooms that are relaxing, cozy and homey. Liza’s drapes, beddings and accessories helped me achieve the look and ambiance I wanted. The hotel rooms are comfortable and relaxing for those who want to rest and have some quiet, recharging privacy.

“At the same time, I don’t want guests to remain inside the rooms all day! There’s so much relaxing, soul-nourishing beauty outside that they simply must go out, at least in the terraces where the views are spectacular,” Acacio says.

The new hotel is for members and guests of the San Juanico Park, Golf and Country Club who want the convenience of overnight (or several nights) accommodations to avoid the hassle of going to the golf course and back to their hotels outside of Barangay Camansihay.

For Victor Domingo, the President of the San Juanico Park, Golf and Country Club, the new hotel is an important addition that makes their place even more attractive to members, potential members, golf enthusiasts and visitors.

“The experience of San Juanico Park, Golf and Country Club has gone from just enjoying a golf game with friends and family into a more complete experience of having a relaxing vacation as well,” says Domingo.
Other amenities of the San Juanico Park, Golf and Country Club include its spacious and comfy restaurant that serves delicious and mouth-watering local and international cuisine. Stay-in guests are also treated to free breakfast at the restaurant when they book accommodations at the hotel.

Filipinos are known all over the world as diligent, hard workers who persevere and show strength even in the most difficult events. It’s one of the reasons why thousands of overseas Filipino workers excel at their jobs, enduring homesickness and fatigue to be able to provide for their families back home. It is also one of the reasons why Pinoys are able to adjust anywhere. Often likened to the bamboo, a Filipino is said to be as pliant as this perennial tree, overcoming even the most trying times: Filipinos don’t break, they simply bend and bounce back, wearing pain and hardships as battle scars that they can be proud of.

The Toughest of Them All

“Ang trabaho ay ‘di limitado sa laboratoryo,” he explains. “Kailangan ko rin libutin at inspeksyunin ang bawa’t bahagi ng makinarya ng planta. Hindi biro ang taas nito (150 ft.) at minsan, mahigit pa. Pagkatapos ng maghapon o minsan magdamag na trabaho, sakit ng katawan ay ‘di maiiwasan.”

He adds that this pain is all part of the signs of a job well done. After all, Rey knows that he is able to help many people enjoy a worry-free life because of his work.

Pound for Pound (and Pain)

No one else embodies the true Filipino spirit, diligence, and strength other than the world’s best pound-for-pound fighter. After all, Manny Pacquiao has had the humblest of beginnings before reaching where he is right now.

It isn’t a secret that this seven-division world champion has had to live through a tough life. Manny gave up schooling and left home so that his mother could focus on caring for his other siblings. And, although he is now considered one of the best fighters of the century, he started out doing barely legal brawls and matches as a young teenager, taking punches from life in and out of the ring.

It can be said that Manny has worn his pain with pride through all these years. With each hit he takes, with each punch he receives, Manny bounces back and hits harder—both literally and figuratively. A “never say die” attitude has propelled him to win boxing matches, even against those who people thought were stronger than he was.

The bruises he receives, the black eyes, the sore muscles: all these are just mini-trophies of sorts for Manny, who treats pain as he does his successes—as symbols of his hard work, perseverance, and strength. It’s no wonder that he has had Alaxan FR beside him through all the years of his career—15, to be exact.

The Youth Olympic Flame, representing the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect, will then blaze a trail to one city in each continent – Berlin, Dakar, Mexico City, Auckland and Seoul – symbolically connecting youth of the world to the Olympic Movement and uniting them in a global celebration of upcoming Youth Olympic Games.

UPPC in SCG Paper
Receives Green Choice Seal for its Container Board

United Pulp and Paper Co., Inc. (UPPC) in SCG Paper, the leading manufacturer of high-quality and cost-efficient industrial-grade paper in the country, was awarded the Green Choice Seal by The National Ecolabelling Programme – Green Choice Philippines.

“We are proud that UPPC in SCG Paper has been labeled the most environmentally efficient industrial paper manufacturer in the Philippines by an independent body,” said Montri Mahaplerkpong, UPPC President and CEO, during a recently held forum for business associates entitled, Eco2 2010: a GREEN OUTLOOK on Business and Environment.

Prior to receiving the Green Choice Seal, the Container Board underwent an extensive two-month environmental assessment. To date, only 15 Philippine-made products have been certified as environmentally safe by the Green Choice Program.

Today we celebrate the opening of our 3rd Philippine International Motor Show, the country’s flagship auto show.

Change, as they say, is in the air. And the Philippine auto industry is at the verge of major changes. For the first time, auto sales could surpass the highest sales ever achieved in 1996 of 162,000 units. We are growing at a rate of 37% so far. High consumer and business confidence continues. And the second half of the year is looking pretty good.

Global observers echo the same bullish sentiment. The economic growth forecast has been raised to 5.5%. Money sent home by OFWs is hitting a record high, at $18 billion. Meanwhile, banks continue to aggressively lend, giving auto buyers easy access to funds, to finance their purchases.

The momentum has turned positive, with expectations that our President Aquino can steer the economy in the right direction.

The local auto industry has shown remarkable resiliency. Despite the recent global recession, and the burden of auto smuggling, we have achieved growth year after year. Resilience, however, should not be taken for granted. Without smuggling, the growth could have been stronger; the increase in sales higher, and job creation, greater.

The auto industry is one of the Philippines’ few remaining major industries. What we have in common with our ASEAN neighbors, is the prohibition of imported used vehicles. Sadly, what sets us apart is the lack of the strict implementation of that ban. Without it, the auto industry cannot achieve its full potential.

A stop to smuggling is a green light to a bigger domestic auto market which in turn is a go for immediate job creation.

This then is our HOPE and a wish for a more vibrant auto industry, a bigger auto market, and for more employment.

Change is in the air. A brighter future for the auto industry, for its autoworkers, and for the economy can become a reality.

We are thankful that part of the President’s top priority includes job creation and a firm stand against all forms of corruption, including smuggling. As the President says, “Kung walang corrupt, walang mahirap.”

The timing could not have been better. Global demand is growing and the Philippines has an advantage. We can offer our underutilized assembly plants to serve both domestic and regional export needs. We have a growing domestic market with over 90 million car-loving Filipinos—with much room to expand, for both assemblers and distributors alike.

Asia is the auto market with the greatest potential. It is already the biggest—and the most profitable market in the world.

We have the capacity. We have the capability. We have the skills and engineering knowhow. And now, we have the right environment.

With the President’s clear direction of making the Philippines a predictable and consistent place for investments, things will only get better from here on. For the economy, for our workers, for the auto industry.

HOPE can finally be realized.

It is against this backdrop that we celebrate the 3rd Philippine International Motor Show, with our theme, “DRIVE THE GREEN ROAD. ”

We aim to use the motor show as a platform to build an eco-driven community. Here, you will find exciting new models, the latest in green technology, alternative solutions to include electric vehicles, hybrids, clean-burning diesel-powered vehicles, as well as advanced fuel-efficient gas engines. Expect 20 global auto brands under one roof, with more than 100 vehicles on display.

This is more than just an exhibit of cars. It represents the nation’s pride and joy of economic cloud and achievement.

With God’s blessings, we are now on our 3rd year, putting together the country’s very own Philippine International Motor Show – one which we, all Filipinos, can be proud of.
