Samsung Philippines announces Sam Milby & Efren Penaflorida as its Youth Ambassadors for Singapore 2010 YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES

SAMSUNG CELEBRATES THE SPIRIT AND EXCITEMENT
OF THE SINGAPORE 2010 YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES

The Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC) and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a global leader in the consumer electronics industry, reaffirmed their partnership recently by announcing several initiatives aimed at sharing the spirit and excitement of the first-ever Youth Olympic Games with Singapore and the rest of the world. Samsung is a Worldwide Partner of the Youth Olympic Games.

Among the list of exciting initiatives for Singapore 2010 is Samsung’s involvement as the International Presenting Partner for the Singapore 2010 Journey of the Youth Olympic Flame (JYOF) and Presenting Partner of the Singapore Torch Relay.

“As a long time supporter of the Olympic Movement, Samsung is lending its full support to ensure that the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) is an unprecedented success and a landmark event in Singapore’s sporting history,” said Mr. Gregory Lee of Samsung.

Samsung as International Presenting Partner for the Journey of the Youth Olympic Flame
The Singapore 2010 Journey of the Youth Olympic Flame (JYOF) is the final countdown to the first Youth Olympic Games. The Olympic Flame for the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games will be lit in Ancient Olympia, Greece, as with all modern day Olympic Games.

The Youth Olympic Flame, representing the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect, will then blaze a trail to one city in each continent – Berlin, Dakar, Mexico City, Auckland and Seoul – symbolically connecting youth of the world to the Olympic Movement and uniting them in a global celebration of upcoming Youth Olympic Games.

As the International Presenting Partner of the JYOF, Samsung will present a host of activities at city celebrations in each of the five international JYOF cities to welcome the Olympic Flame and to celebrate the Youth Olympic movement.

“SYOGOC welcomes Samsung’s sponsorship of the Journey of the Youth Olympic Flame and the commitment that becoming a Presenting Partner represents,” said Mr. Goh Kee Nguan, CEO, SYOGOC. “The involvement of Samsung for the city celebrations at the five cities – Berlin, Dakar, Mexico City, Auckland and Seoul – complements what the cities are organising and we are confident that participants will have a memorable experience when the Youth Olympic Flame visits their city.”

Samsung Philippines announces Sam Milby & Efren Penaflorida as its Youth Ambassadors for Singapore 2010 YOG

Samsung Electronics Phils Corporation (SEPCO) also announced that popular singer, host and actor Sam Milby and 2009 CNN hero Efren Penflorida will be the Samsung Youth Ambassadors to the Singapore 2010 YOG. “Efren & Sam’s personality, passion, pursuit of excellence in their respective careers, and active lifestyle makes them the perfect Samsung Youth Ambassadors, representing the shared values of Singapore 2010 and Samsung,” said Mr. Benjie Jimenez , SEPCO Marketing Director.
Sam Milby said: “I am honored to represent Samsung at the YOG. I know the company is truly dedicated to young people and as the Youth Ambassador, I hope to contribute to sharing the experience and excitement together with youth around the world.”

As an established leader when it comes to supporting sport and athletics, Samsung aims to leverage its role as a Worldwide Partner of Singapore 2010 to highlight its dedication and passion to connect youth and sport in the pursuit of achievement.

UPPC in SCG Paper
Receives Green Choice Seal for its Container Board

United Pulp and Paper Co., Inc. (UPPC) in SCG Paper, the leading manufacturer of high-quality and cost-efficient industrial-grade paper in the country, was awarded the Green Choice Seal by The National Ecolabelling Programme – Green Choice Philippines.

“We are proud that UPPC in SCG Paper has been labeled the most environmentally efficient industrial paper manufacturer in the Philippines by an independent body,” said Montri Mahaplerkpong, UPPC President and CEO, during a recently held forum for business associates entitled, Eco2 2010: a GREEN OUTLOOK on Business and Environment.

He added, “We shifted to 100% utilization of recycled paper a decade ago, installed an advanced effluent treatment plant, and continue to use more bio-mass energy to drive our operations. Operationally, we build on the inroads we have already achieved in reinventing our manufacturing processes to further reduce our carbon footprint. The larger challenge still remains to inspire and motivate others to join in the movement.”

As part of UPPC in SCG Paper’s vision of what it calls a “Green World,” the company ensures that all additives in its production process are free of hazardous substances. Its ISO 9001:2000 attests to the safety and quality of its products while its certification in ISO 14001:2004 affirms the minimal environmental impact of its production process and operations. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has recognized UPPC in SCG Paper for its air emission and water effluent quality. UPPC in SCG Paper is a proven safe workplace with its OHSAS 18001, series of 2007, certifying occupational health and safety.

“We live our ‘Green World’ vision in our day-to-day interaction with our own employees, the communities in which we operate, and our external business partners,” said the UPPC President.

UPPC in SCG Paper’s Container Board is a biodegradable, three-ply paper, properly manufactured to fit customer requirements. It comes from 150 to 200 grammages and is intended to be used as a linerboard in the manufacturing of corrugated boxboards. It was recognized primarily for its 100 percent utilization of recycled paper and technologically advanced effluent treatment plant.

Prior to receiving the Green Choice Seal, the Container Board underwent an extensive two-month environmental assessment. To date, only 15 Philippine-made products have been certified as environmentally safe by the Green Choice Program.

Today we celebrate the opening of our 3rd Philippine International Motor Show, the country’s flagship auto show.

Change, as they say, is in the air. And the Philippine auto industry is at the verge of major changes. For the first time, auto sales could surpass the highest sales ever achieved in 1996 of 162,000 units. We are growing at a rate of 37% so far. High consumer and business confidence continues. And the second half of the year is looking pretty good.

Global observers echo the same bullish sentiment. The economic growth forecast has been raised to 5.5%. Money sent home by OFWs is hitting a record high, at $18 billion. Meanwhile, banks continue to aggressively lend, giving auto buyers easy access to funds, to finance their purchases.

The momentum has turned positive, with expectations that our President Aquino can steer the economy in the right direction.

The local auto industry has shown remarkable resiliency. Despite the recent global recession, and the burden of auto smuggling, we have achieved growth year after year. Resilience, however, should not be taken for granted. Without smuggling, the growth could have been stronger; the increase in sales higher, and job creation, greater.

The auto industry is one of the Philippines’ few remaining major industries. What we have in common with our ASEAN neighbors, is the prohibition of imported used vehicles. Sadly, what sets us apart is the lack of the strict implementation of that ban. Without it, the auto industry cannot achieve its full potential.

A stop to smuggling is a green light to a bigger domestic auto market which in turn is a go for immediate job creation.

This then is our HOPE and a wish for a more vibrant auto industry, a bigger auto market, and for more employment.

Change is in the air. A brighter future for the auto industry, for its autoworkers, and for the economy can become a reality.

We are thankful that part of the President’s top priority includes job creation and a firm stand against all forms of corruption, including smuggling. As the President says, “Kung walang corrupt, walang mahirap.”

The timing could not have been better. Global demand is growing and the Philippines has an advantage. We can offer our underutilized assembly plants to serve both domestic and regional export needs. We have a growing domestic market with over 90 million car-loving Filipinos—with much room to expand, for both assemblers and distributors alike.

Asia is the auto market with the greatest potential. It is already the biggest—and the most profitable market in the world.

We have the capacity. We have the capability. We have the skills and engineering knowhow. And now, we have the right environment.

With the President’s clear direction of making the Philippines a predictable and consistent place for investments, things will only get better from here on. For the economy, for our workers, for the auto industry.

HOPE can finally be realized.

It is against this backdrop that we celebrate the 3rd Philippine International Motor Show, with our theme, “DRIVE THE GREEN ROAD. ”

We aim to use the motor show as a platform to build an eco-driven community. Here, you will find exciting new models, the latest in green technology, alternative solutions to include electric vehicles, hybrids, clean-burning diesel-powered vehicles, as well as advanced fuel-efficient gas engines. Expect 20 global auto brands under one roof, with more than 100 vehicles on display.

This is more than just an exhibit of cars. It represents the nation’s pride and joy of economic cloud and achievement.

With God’s blessings, we are now on our 3rd year, putting together the country’s very own Philippine International Motor Show – one which we, all Filipinos, can be proud of.

Thank you, and to God be the glory!

A good old friend of mine I saw over the weekend at a colleague’s birthday party asked me a very simple question: how do I get to Eastwood City in Libis? Answering her (I mean really guiding her) would have taken some time a year and a half ago, when the only way to get there using public transportation was through the Cubao-Rosario Jeepney route. I could have just told her to take a taxi, but then, I would not have anything to share with you here. So I got my grooves going and started to tell her how a little public transportation service called the shuttle totally took this pre-dominantly contact center community which is Eastwood by storm.

Right now, the vans of the shuttle service caters to people going to and from the MRT station at Quezon Avenue, SM North, Marikina, Ortigas, and Ayala-Makati. The shuttle’s main terminal is located behind Eastwood McDonald’s (which was famous for being one of the first McDo restaurants open for 24 hours) and just beside the relatively new Il Pirata restaurant (which has a cool moderate-size pirate ship on its other side). They usually transport people from 6-11AM on weekdays, and the vans start to fill up by 5PM with people coming home from work. The last time I checked, there were still vans operational as late as 9 PM. Later than that or in between the dead hours, the vans can be rented to go their usual routes for some fee as agreed upon by the drivers and the passengers.

The Eastwood shuttle service is now over a year old, but still, it remains largely unknown to Eastwood outsiders as suggested by my friend’s inquiry. A little history: when it first started out, there was one dispatcher and two to three vans, and employees wanting to use the service had to wait some time before the vans fill up. The dispatcher literally had to recruit passengers coming from buildings as far as the Citibank which is way out at the entrance. By the first month, regular passengers started coming in but there were other issues–the police had been arresting van drivers back at the Quezon Ave. MRT, creating some panic with passengers, and for some, disenchantment. Thankfully the issue was resolved, the number of patrons and vans grew in time, and the shuttle terminal became an everyday part of Eastwood life. For me and most of my friends in Katipunan, the shuttle service was an answer to our prayers. Before the shuttle, you have to take the long route of going back to Cubao first and braving the traffic at Aurora or the long walk to Cubao-LRT in order to get to Katipunan. After that you still have to take a tricycle to even get to somewhere near your apartment. Another option is to ride a taxi, but to an increase of 200% of your transportation expenses, considering Katipunan is just a 5-minute drive from Eastwood. The shuttle solved these problems by making a compromise between the two: it cuts the taxi fare by 50% and traverses straight to Katipunan like a regular jeepney should.

I would recommend people to use the shuttle IF they are leaving Eastwood, for the practical reason that the morning schedules are designed primarily for the Eastwood workforce. It’s a little funny because I arrived at the same conclusion after explaining and narrating this to my friend, which of course did not solve her predicament of how best to get to Eastwood. After a ten second pause, I told her it would be better if she would just take a taxi.
