MTV Philippines Staying Alive Music Summit for HIV/AIDS 2005
MTV Philippines with Unite for Children, Unite Against AIDS campaign and Frenzy Condoms brought together 30 of the country’s biggest pop, indie and rock acts last night at the Fort Bonifacio Open Field in Taguig to commemorate World AIDS Day.

By the time we entered the venue, thousands of rock music fanatics were already girating, bodysurfing, jumping, throwing inflated condoms (courtesy of event sponsor Frenzy) and water bottles to the beat of Kitchie Nadal’s livelier tunes; Imago then gave a two-song well-received performance although one could only wonder if the crowd was actually listening to them.

Still, what made the black-clad crowd composed of such groups as “Pazaway ng Taytay”, “Rakista ng Commonwealth” and such go wild were the royalties of local rock: Bamboo, River Maya, Sandwich and Parokya ni Edgar to name a few. On the other hand, Ely Buendia’s Pupil, Stonefree and Itchy Worms, which played not-too-danceable yet great music allowed the crowd to catch its breath while the “cute” music of Cueshe sent the female crowd into romantic revelry with their hit “Stay”. Others who appeared in the concert were MYMP, Viva Hot Babes, Sarah Geronimo, Christian Bautista, Rachelle Ann Go and Hale.
Mig Ayesa of Rock Star: INXS headlined the event with four songs including two originals and a cover of “We Will Rock You” as a tribute to Queen’s Freddie Mercury who died from AIDS in 1991. His lively performance backed by members of various bands unfortunately did not appeal to the majority of the crowd due perhaps to his being foreign (in spite of his Pinoy background) or that his Rock Star:INXS stint wasn’t known among the audience. It was actually the sparse VIP section that cheered for him.
Messages about HIV/AIDS prevention and care for AIDS victims were delivered by celebrities such as Nancy Castiglone, China Hortaleza, Alessandra de Rossi and Vhong Navarro. MTV VJs Marc Abaya, Cindy Kurleto and KC Montero with Pinoy Big Brother’s Mariel Rodriguez hosted the event.
This was the year that MTV Philippines staged the annual Staying Alive Music Summit for HIV/AIDS, which aims to inform the youth about protection from HIV/AIDS and fight stigma against HIV/AIDS sufferers . In 2003, the music channel brought in international pop singer Mandy Moore while 2004 it featured artists Duncan Sheik, The Barbs, Jay Sean, and Joshua Payne.
