June is fast approaching. It’s not only the favorite knot-tying month but also the heymonth for businesses that earn most from the wedding season. It is also when parents have to be tighter with their budgets because school opening is fast approaching.

Just before youngsters say ta-ta to their swim suits and say hi to their uniforms, learn some back-to-school safety tips for your kids, you control freaks, err, concerned moms and dads out there.

1. De-gizmo your kid.

Aside from being thieves’ attention-grabbers, cellphones, ipods, and other techie gadgets can make a kid oblivious to his or her surroundings. Children go to school to learn and not to have leisure time tinkering on their stuffs particularly the really young ones. Sure cellphones are now considered protection gadgets as a parent can easily be updated with the whereabouts of his or her kid with just one text or call. But tell them to at least not use them while walking or when in crowded spots unless it’s an emergency.

2. Get the most out of PTA meetings.

PTA (Parents Teachers Association) meetings are not just about singilan and boring officer elections. Attending one is a good chance to know what your kid’s school is doing to keep him or her safe. Do they have a “no going out until dismissal time” policy? Are their fences high enough for ober da bakod attempts. You know that kids can be that desperate. How strict are their security guards?

Stuber, an instructor on how to keep your child safe when at school suggests that if your child is old enough to go to school all by himself, one way to help in ensuring that he or she reaches the school safely is to request for a call-back system. This is for the administration to call the parents if the child does not arrive at school.
3. Know your child’s route to school or his buddies.

One good way to monitor your child’s safety is to check if he or she will be walking any dimlit place or somewhere that is crime-prone. Paranoia can’t be avoided if you have a footloose kid whom you think can be easily excited by his or her friends to go malling or playing online games after school, if not (cross your fingers) while cutting classes. Be in control by taking time to befriend his or her friends. This way you may even talk to their parents on what measures to carry out to ensure the kids’ safety. If your kid has a yaya, get her involved with this too by quizzing her about your kids’ pals. Teaching her not to believe just about anything that a stranger instructs her to do can prevent your kid from being a victim of abduction, which is what many parents worry about the most when their kids are at school.
Now after knowing those tips on how you can make your child’s going back to school less scary especially for those with first-timers, it’s time for you to know a bit about how you can make yourself safer during the back-to-school shopping season. According to a report, Manila Police District advises that the following crime-prone places be avoided if you’re in the business district – Emerald Avenue, Pearl Drive, SM Megamall, San Miguel Avenue, Shaw Boulevard and Shangri-La Mall
