MOVE! Against Pneumonia – the biggest gathering of dancing doctors
Doctors MOVE! Against Pneumonia
Who would have thought that a pair of dancing shoes can save a child’s life?
Hundreds of pediatricians from all over the country will be trading in their stethoscopes for dancing shoes in MOVE! – the biggest gathering of dancing doctors moving to the beat of pneumonia prevention and awareness.
MOVE! Against Pneumonia
“People don’t think that pneumonia is a major threat anymore,” says Dr. Lulu Bravo, Executive Director of the National Institutes of Health. “They think that since it’s already curable and preventable, it’s an ‘old’ disease that parents shouldn’t worry about. But a look at the statistics tells us otherwise.” Bravo shares that the Philippines still ranks among the Top 10 countries with the most number of recorded pneumonia cases. And with 36 Filipino children dying every day or more than 13,500 Filipino children dying every year because of it, pneumonia is the top killer of Filipino children.
Doctors like Bravo are among those who easily recognize that pneumonia awareness — especially in the country– still has a long way to go. And it is with the aim of changing this that MOVE! was conceptualized.
“When we talk about disease awareness or prevention, the default is to hold seminars or distribute flyers; but this time, we wanted to do something different. As the name of the event signifies, we want to be able to move people,” says Bravo. “And holding a dance spectacle participated in by pediatricians will hopefully be an engagingly different way for people to sit up, take notice and most especially move against pneumonia.”
Every doctor that will participate in MOVE! will be protecting a child from pneumonia. In exchange for participation in MOVE! a pneumococcal disease vaccine will be given in their behalf to the National Institutes of Health.
In the event, Mickey Perz, a Pinoy Big Brother housemate renowned for his breakdancing moves, will teach the pediatricians his “fight against pneumonia” dance steps. “I’m really committed to this thrust of preventing this killer disease and dancing is one of the main contributions that I can do,” says the young celebrity.
MOVE! For Better Health Care
MOVE! is an initiative of the National Institutes of Health and GlaxoSmithKline.
“GSK is committed to improving the quality of life by enabling people to do more, feel better and live longer– and MOVE!, with its thrust for pneumonia prevention and awareness is an event where we can do just that,” shares Dr. Sally Gatchalian, Director, Clinical R & D and Medical Affairs of GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals, Philippines.
Aside from providing the vaccines for MOVE!, GlaxoSmithKline takes their commitment to pneumonia disease prevention a step further by offering its pneumococcal vaccine 40% lower. The said initiative is in line with GlaxoSmithKline’s ValueHealth Philosophy. ValueHealth offers significant price reductions from GSK’s original branded medicines and was carried out in response to Filipinos’ need for improved access to high quality and affordable vaccines and medicines.
MOVE! coincides with the 2-day GSK Pediatric Congress which unites pediatricians all over the country to talk about the latest medical issues and knowledge. “We want to arm doctors with the knowledge to be advocates to fight pneumonia, which has been devastating for so many Filipino families,” shares Derrick Sim, GSK VP for Vaccines.
