The Japan Foundation, Manila and Philippine Airlines launch Taiko! Tambol!” at the Cultural Center of the Philippines – Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo tonight at 7:30 pm.

The program features Yamato, The Drummers of Japan, an ensemble of taiko drummers. Taiko drums are among the many instruments used in performing Japanese ceremonies and special occasions. Yamato specializes in blending theatrical acts with explosive percussions that feature Japan’s rich traditional music.

The group, which calls itself after Japan’s name in the eighth century, was founded in 1993 in Nara, the country’s ancient capital. Yamato will perform with the Manila Japanese School Wadaiko Club and the Negros Drumbeaters.
“Taiko! Tambol!” opens the Philippines-Japan friendship year and will be staged at CCP-Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo on January 11, PETA Theatre Centre in Quezon City on January 12, Marikina City Riverbanks Center on January 13 and Ayala Center-Cebu on January 14.
Admission to tonight’s show is free. Call CCP at 832-1125 or The Japan Foundation at 811-6155 to 58 for ticket inquiries.
